How is the HouseGuard™ Waterproofing System applied?

Step 1: Trained, qualified contractors spray TruDry™ waterproofing membrane onto the exterior of the concrete foundation walls.

Step 2: Dow® Styrofoam® insulation drainage boards are placed over and bonded to the cured polymer asphalt membrane and positioned to drain into a functioning drain tile system.

How does the HouseGuard™ System work?

Asphalt is one of the earliest known construction materials, used since antiquity because of its excellent adhesive and waterproofing properties. As the world’s largest producer of asphalt emulsions, we’ve used our technology to modify the asphalt with elastomeric polymers and other additives to give you the most durable waterproofing plus exceptional adhesion to the basement walls and bonding to the Dow® Styrofoam® insulation boards. The elasticity of the membrane will bridge the small cracks which may occur over time in your foundation walls. Further, we’ve formulation an environmentally-friendly, water-based emulsion that makes the membrane easy-to-apply at ambient temperatures, quick to cure and free of flammable, fume-producing solvents contained in some competitive waterproofing products that can penetrate into your walls and surrounding soils. The TruDry™ water-based emulsion bonds well to damp and uncured walls, allowing it to be quickly applied to foundations once forms are removed. It is applied to a minimum cured membrane thickness of 40-mils, giving you superior protection over damproofing and other systems that applied as thin as 10-mils.

The Dow® Styrofoam® rigid insulation boards.
The water-draining boards add insulation and further protection from ground moisture. In the early 1900’s, The Dow® Chemical Company invented a process for extruding polystyrene to achieve a closed cell foam that resists moisture. This Styrofoam® brand insulation was awarded "Best in Class" in the rigid insulation category of a 2006 survey conducted by Custom Builder Magazine. (Note that this is not the same material commonly used for beadfoam coffee cups.) The boards’ drainage grooves are specially designed to channel ground water down to the drain tile and to wick moisture away from the foundation walls. Unlike fiberglass which retains water, the rigid extruded polystyrene polymer boards easily shed moisture. The boards give added protection to the TruDry™ waterproofing membrane, and they maintain the nearly original R-5 thermal efficiency value even in wet environments. In sum, they give far better drainage and insulating value than beadfoam or fiberglass.

Damproofing is offered as standard with my house and is a less expensive alternative. How is it different from HouseGuard™ Waterproofing?

Damproofing is typically a black asphaltic type product. But don’t be fooled by its similar look. Damproofing is applied much thinner than waterproofing. Its application can be up to 4 times thinner and normally is a cheap, non-modified, brittle product. Most damproofing products are also petroleum solvent-based. The solvent based product produces fumes, does not reliably coat moist surfaces, and puts unwanted ozone depleting vapors in the soil and air. Because of its cheap cost, damproofing does not normally include the elastomeric polymers and additives that give the HouseGuard™ Membranes their durability and performance. Damproofing’s thin vapor barrier is not unable to withstand hydrostatic pressure like the HouseGuard™ waterproofing system. It cannot bridge cracks which normally occur in concrete over time. Damproofing has a typical life expectancy of 18 months to 3 years while HouseGuard™ waterproofing can be expected to last much, much longer and comes with a backed limited warranty for up to 30 years depending upon the product and system you choose.
